I have been employed as a researcher on a variety of deep-sea biodiversity projects at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, since 2001. I am also the manager of the Discovery Collections at NOCs – a unique collection of deep-sea samples. My research focus is the taxonomy, biogeography and biodiversity of deep-sea amphipods. As a part of this work I am revising some of the problem genera and species within the Lysianassoidea.
As a taxonomist I have a keen interest in the advances in modern methods of taxonomic databasing, interactive web-based keys and digital illustration. I also retain more than a passing interest in fish parasitology and in particular studies of Cymothoid isopods following my PhD, studying the taxonomy, ecology and pathology of cymothoid isopods in both wild and farmed fish.
Taxonomy and biodiversity in the deep sea
Since 2015, I have been Chair of the Steering Committee of the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). I am also chief editor for the World Amphipoda Database (WAD) and co-ordinate the World Register of Deep-Sea Species (WoRDSS).
I am an editor for Zookeys and referee for numerous journals including Deep-Sea Research, Systematic Parasitology, JMBA, Marine Biodiversity, Organisms and Biodiversity, Zookeys, Zoosystema, Zootaxa.
I am a council member and Website Officer for the Porcupine Marine Natural History Society, and a Member of the Marine Biological Association of the UK.
