British Oceanographic Data Centre
The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) is a national facility for looking after and distributing data concerning the marine environment.
Our data holdings
BODC deal with biological, chemical, physical and geophysical data, and the databases contain measurements in excess of 25,000 variables. BODC staff have direct experience of marine data collection and analysis. We work alongside information technology specialists to ensure that data are documented and stored for current and future use.
The BODC approach
The BODC approach to marine data management involves
- Careful storage, quality control and archiving of data so they are unaffected by changes in technology and will be available into the future.
- Distributing data to scientists, education, industry and the public – the goal is to enable online access to all data via the BODC web site.
- Working alongside scientists during marine research projects – BODC provide a data management service during the life time of the project.
Why do it?
Data are precious – they are fundamental to the understanding of the processes that control our natural environment.
The data help provide answers to both local questions (such as the likelihood of coastal flooding) and planetary wide issues (such as the prediction of the impact of climate change). The better we can predict these events, the better we can protect ourselves into the future. It will not only affect us, but the quality of the lives of our children and grandchildren.
