Profile

Biography

My research focuses on the characterisation and estimation of errors and biases in marine meteorological observations made by Voluntary Observing Ships (VOS) and the impact of these errors on estimates of the surface fluxes of heat and moisture. The research also examines the uncertainty in globally gridded data sets of the meteorological parameters and fluxes due to these errors. As part of this research Version 2 of the NOCS Flux Dataset has been developed and made available via the British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC) and the US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Variables of interest include:

Meteorological parameters

  • Sea surface temperature
  • Marine air temperature
  • Marine specific humidity
  • Wind speed
  • Sea level pressure
  • Cloud cover

Flux parameters

  • Sensible heat flux
  • Latent heat flux (evaporation)
  • Solar radiation
  • Longwave radiation

I gained my PhD in 2009 from the University of Southampton, looking at the Surface Forcing of the North Atlantic: Accuracy and Variability.
