Biography

NOCL Sea Level and Climate

  • Studies of sea level variations from time scales of hours (e.g., tides) through to long term changes as a result of climate change using tide gauge, satellite altimeter and space gravity data.
  • Development of sea level monitoring networks globally (GLOSS) in the UK, South Atlantic and Africa.
  • Sea level measurement technology (e.g., state-of-the-art tide gauges).
  • Liverpool maritime history.
  • Interests in aspects of fundamental physics (undertaken vicariously).
  • Member of the Challenger Society and American Geophysical Union. Fellow of the International Association of Geodesy.
  • Former Director of the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (PSMSL) at NOCL and Chairman of the Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.

  • Review Editor for the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report.
  • Visiting Professor Liverpool University School of Environmental Sciences.

  • 2009 – Denny Medal of IMAREST.
  • 2009 – Certificate of Appreciation from ICSU and World Meteorological Organisation for contributions to International Polar Year.
  • 2010 – Vening Meinesz medal of the European Geosciences Union.
  • 2011 – Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in New Year’s Honours List.
  • 2011 – Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission 50th Anniversary Commemorative Medal.
