We hope this book will spark the interest of readers and drive them to find out more about how we can protect this vital part of our blue planet

  • The book brings to life the science research from world leading NOC scientists Dr Chelsey Baker, Dr Sara Fowell, Prof. Steph Henson, Dr Alice Marzocchi and Dr Katsia Pabortsava.
  • The story aims to educate and inspire young readers to protect our ocean and even become plankton poo scientists of the future.

Join best friends and science detectives Olivia and Ravi as they explore the oceans in the second title in the unique and inspiring Princess Olivia Investigates illustrated middle grade series, from the globally bestselling science author, Lucy Hawking.

‘Everyone talks about how powerful the oceans are, how huge, how mysterious, all those underwater creatures living down there in the deep. But they are so vulnerable! They’ve got no one to stand up for them!’

Ex-princess Olivia Alez is loving her life away from the royal palace. Now she isn’t a princess anymore she’s even more determined to be a science investigator, finding out things about the world around her.

When she goes to visit her uncle Cassander for a holiday, she realises there’s a huge problem. The oceans are filled with rubbish, and she can’t see any fish swimming about. They’re nothing like the bright blue seas full of life that she imagined.

When Captain Max and his parrot Pieces O Plastic turn up on the beach, Olivia and her best friend Ravi decide that getting on board their pirate ship to join a treasure hunt might be a good way to find out what’s going on out there on the ocean waves. But they quickly realise that there is more to discover than they ever imagined...

Including up to the minute science inserts throughout the story, carefully and thoughtfully written for young readers by experts in their field, the second title in the Princess Olivia Investigates series will inspire the scientists and activists of the future.

To support with research for the story, Lucy Hawking collaborated with the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), working closely with Dr Chelsey Baker, Dr Sara Fowell, Prof. Steph Henson, Dr Alice Marzocchi and Dr Katsia Pabortsava.

Prof Henson comments, “We were thrilled to work with Lucy to showcase the marine science we do at NOC to a young audience. Princess Olivia’s adventures really bring to life the importance of the oceans for controlling climate change and for supporting all life on our planet. We hope this book will spark the interest of readers and drive them to find out more about how we can protect this vital part of our blue planet”.
