What is MEDIN and What Does it Do?

The Marine Environmental Data and Information Network, or MEDIN, is a partnership with a simple but vital mission: to make sure we get the most value out of all the marine data collected across the UK. We provide the tools and frameworks for efficient data capture, storage, and sharing, which helps everyone better understand and sustainably manage our marine environment.

MEDIN was set up in 2008 to solve a big problem. The UK has a huge community of people and organisations working in our seas, from researchers and conservation groups to industry and government. Before MEDIN, the valuable data they collected often stayed locked away in separate systems. MEDIN was created to change that by providing a national framework that brings everyone together. It’s a collaborative and open partnership that supports the entire UK marine community.

How Does NOC Support MEDIN?

The National Oceanography Centre plays two key roles in the partnership, allowing it to thrive and achieve its goals.

Funding

NOC is part of a consortium of sponsors that provides the financial support to keep MEDIN's important work going.

Operations

NOC also manage the administration of MEDIN on behalf of the sponsors, providing the organisational backbone that allows this collaborative network to thrive.

How Many Organisations Participate in MEDIN?

MEDIN is a real team effort, with a network of over 60 partner organisations. These partners come from across the public and private sectors and have all made a commitment to the best practices in marine data management.

Where Can You Learn More About MEDIN?

Yes, you can find everything you need to know about MEDIN, including how to become a partner and what data standards we use, at www.medin.org.uk. The website shows how our collaborative partnership is helping to support the sustainable management of the UK's marine environment and the growth of the blue economy.
