Focusing Our Work on Societal Needs and Value For All

Now is a critical time for marine research. The role of the ocean and seas in mediating our climate and supporting all life on Earth, including our own, is increasingly recognised not only by scientists but by wider society. This brings a significant opportunity to the marine research community but also brings the challenge: to provide the science and evidence to meet global demands for knowledge.

We act as a champion for independent scientific advice for policy makers, society, and industry, identifying the emerging ocean issues and challenges, along with the potential opportunities. We contribute to consultations, committees, All Party Parliamentary Groups and independent briefings — bringing together the latest evidence and knowledge for the benefit of all.

How We Deliver Impact

To gain a deeper knowledge of the ocean, we must deliver world-leading science and deliver the capacity (including engineering, digital and laboratory) for ourselves and others to do that science. On top of this, our science must translate to be used in decision-making processes and to help inform and educate the public.

Science and Research

Focusing on four ocean-related missions, the science and research we carry out all aims towards the overall purpose to gain a deeper knowledge of the ocean to address major challenges facing society and the natural world.

Supporting Policy and Industry

We provide evidence-based research to government in order to support decision-makers and policy, and we also work alongside industry to stimulate prosperity and growth.

International Partners and Collaborations

We play a vital role in delivering advice to underpin diverse UK interests in international ocean affairs, using expertise from a range of disciplines to to engage with international partners.

Engaging the Public

As part of our new strategy, providing value for society is a crucial part of our work. In order to inform the public, we ensure that the knowledge gained is used to benefit society and planetary health.

Arctic Science and Innovation: For a Changing World

The Arctic is one of the most rapidly changing environments on our planet. The opportunities and risks posed to climate, biodiversity, human wellbeing, marine-economies and geopolitical stability are global. At NOC we have identified priority research themes, that are addressed by our experts, in collaboration with partners and stakeholders. The Arctic is one of our priority research areas.

Delivering Impact Alongside UK and Global Partners

As the lead centre for UKRI-NERC marine research, we play an important role in collaborating with global partners and contributing to world-leading research groups and projects.

Our Partnership Networks

NOC currently plays a vital role in delivering scientific and technical advice to underpin diverse UK interests in international ocean affairs. To achieve this, NOC draws on a critical mass of independent, distinctive scientific and technical expertise across a broad range of disciplines, and we use these to engage with international partners.
