Researching Vital Ocean Systems

The ocean plays a critical and sometimes silent role in regulating our planet. This can range from interactions with our atmosphere, sea ice, and the marine biogeochemical system.

The research NOC's experts carry out ranges from micro-scale turbulence to basin-wide circulation, and spans time scales from hourly events to multi-decadal changes. All of this research contributes to understanding how our ocean works, the role in the climate system, and the actions we need to take to protect the ocean and therefore the planet from wide-scale changes.

NOC's Climate Mission

Studying the ocean helps us understand what’s happening to our climate, where tipping points may be reached, and how the impacts will unfold across the globe—from rising sea levels to shifting weather extremes.
