Supporting Strategic Needs

Understanding ocean systems and their role in climate change, takes many years of observations. Nationally and globally it’s absolutely fundamental that we have the resources to continuously observe these ocean systems and understanding them, as this helps us mitigate and prepare for climate related events.

There is so much going on in the world, it’s easy to be distracted away from climate issues but it’s so important we don’t get distracted from achieving these ocean observations, and essentially understanding the world we live in. Climate change is fundamental to everything we do, and we need to be doing everything we can to understand and reduce the effects.

National Capability Science

NOC is supported by NERC to deliver a range of National Capability activities. These enable the UK to deliver world leading ocean science and support national strategic needs through large scale, long term and highly complex programmes.

Sustained Observations

Sustained ocean observations are the foundation of our understanding of how the ocean regulates climate, supports life, and responds to change.

Data and Digital Technology

NOC is a global leader in ocean understanding through its digital expertise, sharing intelligence with others on how the ocean moves and changes.

Ocean Models

Using modelling techniques can help to apply the research carried out by scientists but also map out what the potential future looks like.

Observing Technology

NOC's abundance of world-leading technology allows society to advance our knowledge of the ocean on a worldwide scale.

Supporting Substantial Science Programmes

NOC plays a key role in a number of different multi-centre and international programmes from a range of different research areas.

AtlantiS (Atlantic Climate and Environmental Science Strategy)
FOCUS (Future States of the Global Coastal Ocean)
CHAMFER (UK Coastal Hazards, Multi-Hazard Controls on Flooding and Erosion)
BIOPOLE (Biogeochemical Processes and Ecosystem Function in Changing Polar Systems and their Global Impacts)
TerraFIRMA (Future Impacts, Risks and Mitigation Actions in a Changing Earth System)
CANARI (Climate Change in the Arctic and North Atlantic Region and Impacts on the UK)

National Centres and Facilities

The National Marine Equipment Pool (NMEP) is the largest centralised marine scientific equipment pool in Europe with a diverse range of scientific instruments and equipment capable of sampling from the sea surface to the deep ocean. Holding more than 10,000 instruments and technologies, it provides scientists with access to skilled marine technicians and engineers.

NOC operates two world-class research ships, RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook, that travel all over the globe enabling scientists and researchers to carry out vital marine science that further develops our knowledge of how the ocean works and the impact climate change is having on it.
