Speaking to the Experts Behind the News
At NOC, the scientists and researchers involved in making the biggest discoveries and uncovering key learnings about the ocean are often at the forefront of national and international news. Some news needs more than a press release or an online story to effectively communicate it's importance.
Our News Splash video series aims to speak to the experts behind the news, giving them a platform to talk about their work in a more informal environment. The videos also act as a way to reach different audiences and allowing people to ingest research in different ways.
Impacts of the Most Explosive Volcanic Eruption Ever Recorded
New research led by NOC, published in September 2023, showed how the massive Hunga volcano eruption in 2022 triggered the fastest underwater flows ever recorded. We spoke to Dr Izzy Yeo and Dr Mike Clare, joint-lead scientists on the paper, to discuss the impacts the eruption had on the ocean and people living on nearby islands.
The New Genetic Testing Approach to Predict Toxic Algae Using Artificial Intelligence
In October 2023, NOC scientists developed a new genetic testing approach to be used alongside artificial intelligence (AI) to test for toxic algae. Dr Jonathan McQuillian, Molecular Biologist at NOC, explained on News Splash how the scientific tool can help UK businesses mitigate health risks in seafood production.
European Summer Weather May Be Predictable Months to Years in Advance
A study by NOC, released in February 2024, discovered a chain of events that leads to hotter and drier European summers. Dr Marilena Oltmanns, lead author on the study, joined News Splash to explain how the location and strength of meltwater occurrences in the North Atlantic in winter provided valuable clues about the location, strength and character of European weather anomalies in the subsequent summers.
How Future Marine Heatwaves Could Devastate UK Marine Ecosystems
A new study by NOC, released in November 2024, revealed where marine heatwave events are most likely to occur in UK waters, for the first time. We spoke to Dr Zoe Jacobs, Biogeochemical Modeller at NOC, and lead author of the study, who explained how the events can have devastating impacts on marine ecosystems and why authors called for more targeted research to improve UK resilience to marine heatwaves.
NOC Awarded £11m for Climate Tipping Point Early Warning Systems Research
In February 2025, NOC scientists were appointed to lead critical research into forecasting a major climate tipping point – the potential collapse of the Atlantic Subpolar Gyre, through more than £11 million in funding, from the UK’s Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA). News Splash spoke to three leading scientists on their specific projects.
Unlocking the Role of High-Temperature Fluids in Explosive Volcanic Eruptions
Scientists from NOC led an international team on a groundbreaking expedition to enhance our ability to forecast and understand the hazards posed by Earth’s most explosive volcanic eruptions. Dr Izzy Yeo, expedition leads, told News Splash all about the importance of the expedition to Santorini, Greece.
Global Environment Outlook New Report
In December 2025, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has unveiled ‘The Global Environment Outlook, Seventh Edition: A Future We Choose (GEO-7)’ at the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7). News Splash spoke to Dr Catia Domingues on her and NOC's contributions to the report.
