Access Opportunities Across Marine Science

Students interested in undertaking research projects with the National Oceanography Centre have access to a wide range of current opportunities across multiple career stages. PhD opportunities at NOC are advertised through several routes. Individual NOC‑hosted or NOC‑associated PhD projects can be found via the Find a PhD platform, as well as through the websites of our doctoral training partners.

These routes reflect the breadth of NOC’s partnerships across the UK and provide opportunities spanning marine science, technology, data science, and interdisciplinary research. In addition to formal doctoral training, NOC supports a number of engagement and bursary schemes designed to widen participation and provide early exposure to marine science and research.

AtlantiS Academic Engagement Programme

The AtlantiS academic engagement programme offers paid opportunities for ECR, Master’s and PhD students to gain hands‑on research experience and work closely with NOC scientists and engineers.

West Science Bursary

The WEST Science Bursary supports undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds to undertake short research placements with NOC, helping to build skills, confidence, and pathways into marine science careers.

More information on the 2026/27 bursary will be available soon.
