The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in Southampton is opening its doors on Sunday 8 June 2025 to give the local community a chance to celebrate World Ocean Day and discover the vital role ocean science plays for us all.

Registration for the hugely popular free event, which offers a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at the UK’s leading centre for ocean research, opened today (April 24).

During this unique day, visitors will be able to explore an exciting programme of interactive exhibits, hands-on activities, live talks and access to our engineering workshops, bringing ocean science to life for all ages.

Visitors will learn about marine life including deep-sea creatures, as well as the pioneering technology developed to monitor and sense the ocean.

They will be able to meet the people behind the science, including oceanographers, engineers, robotics experts and data scientists, all passionate about sharing their knowledge and experience, including the exciting career opportunities in ocean research.

Find your connection with the ocean

“We’re proud to welcome our local community to explore the vital ocean research happening right here in Southampton,” said NOC Chief Executive Dr John Siddorn. “It’s a chance for people to connect with the ocean and be inspired by the incredible work happening at sea and in our world-leading facilities.

“Visitors will find out about how our research is tackling urgent global challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change and natural hazards. We have an exciting demonstration showing how we use deep-sea mud to understand underwater avalanches caused by giant volcanoes, helping to protect coastal communities.”

The event will also share highlights from the current global science programmes onboard the Royal Research Ships (RRS) operated by NOC, RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook

Register in advance

As the NOC is located within Southampton Docks, operated by Associated British Ports (ABP), all visitors must register in advance.

Free tickets are available via Eventbrite
