UK Arctic Ocean and Coastal Research Report

A new report sets out the UK’s vision for understanding and responding to rapid change in the Arctic. Developed through wide collaboration across the country’s research community, the document represents the collective expertise of more than 30 Higher Education Institutes, Research Centres, government agencies and NGOs from across the UK.

The strategy was shaped during a two-day workshop held on 11–12th June 2025 at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in Southampton, where participants identified key priorities and actions for the coming years. A nationwide questionnaire also gathered additional input from the wider community.

Supported by the NERC UK Arctic Office, the report was compiled and edited by Dr Jo Hopkins (National Oceanography Centre, Arctic Lead) and Prof Claire Mahaffey (University of Liverpool, UK Marine Representative to the International Arctic Science Committee), with contributions from a steering team of leading UK polar scientists.

The report highlights the urgent need for coordinated action as the Arctic experiences accelerating ice loss, permafrost collapse, and growing human activity. It stresses that Arctic change has global consequences, from rising sea levels and shifting weather patterns to impacts on biodiversity and the ocean economy. The report also calls for the UK to play a leading role in research, adaptation and sustainable development in the region.
