2.1 Introduction to Marine Robotics

Marine autonomy has been integral to some important scientific research and contributed significantly to new insights within the last decade.

For example, the first ever video footage of life living on hydrothermal vents 5,000 metres below the surface of the ocean was captured by marine robots.

Marine robotics have also helped reveal that deep-ocean processes play a key role in regulating Earth’s climate is primarily driven by cooling waters west of Europe and they provide a method for leading exploration under Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets to further understand the impacts of climate change.
